Heroes & Monsters

exhibition and family trail, Manchester Art Gallery

To provide a way in to the Greek Myths found in the Victorian collection, Jim worked with the learning team in devising a summer exhibition, activities and family trail bringing the stories to life. Part of the process involved working with a local Y6 class to create a new version of the gallery’s Parthenon Frieze casts, depicting highlights and observations from their visit to the gallery.

The main space was also crammed full with murals telling the story of the Olympians overthrowing Cronos. Children could 'pick a realm' and show their allegiances with either a Zeus, Posiedon or Hades headband to wear, then collect a huge map to lead them around the key Victorian works, with fun activities in front of each one.  The back of the map featured a wealth of illustrated stories, animating the myths behind each particular paintings sculpture.
